We’ve been suffering through a complete disconnect with common sense lately, when it comes to kids and weapons. Of course, this isn’t news to anyone on the right, but when it gets to the point where the libertarian entertainer Remy jumps into it, you know it’s getting… well… terrible.

While some on the right might be ambivalent about adding Ahmed, the clock kid, to this mix, the fact still remains that we really are having a major problem with school officials overreacting to “anything remotely violent” in our schools. The problem is that encourages a culture of fear among children. If you don’t get why that can have horrific results, you really weren’t paying attention in history class. Adolf Hitler used fear as a weapon in the minds of youth with his indoctrination programs that desensitized an entire generation of children to the concept of inflicting pain and death on their neighbors. What we’re seeing today is a polar opposite, but that doesn’t make it any better. The end result – complete control of a generation – is the same. Instead of being taught to cause violence, children are being taught to have a paralyzing fear of it. While that might be a boon for the mental health professions in the future, it will also result in a generation full of people with little or no interest in professions like law enforcement. We’re already having issues in that sector, so this could have very dire consequences. Sounds serious, doesn’t it? We’ve collectively been living with a very dangerous attitude – it is fine to surrender freedom for the sake of the illusion of safety. This is just the next step in that process. All politics are local, so maybe it is time for people to actually hold their local officials accountable for creating these insane policies, and creating environments of fear for our children.
